The pushcart classroom

Efren Peñaflorida grew up knowing how easy it was for young people in hard places to be pulled toward gangs. Instead of accepting that path as inevitable, he helped build another one.

In 1997 he co-founded Dynamic Teen Company. Their signature idea was simple and radical: a “pushcart classroom” — a mobile cart loaded with books, pens, tables, and chairs — rolled into unconventional places like cemeteries and trash dumps.

On Saturdays, children came to learn reading, writing, arithmetic, and English from Peñaflorida and teen volunteers. The classroom did not wait for perfect buildings. It went where the children already were.

In 2009, after millions of public votes, CNN named Peñaflorida its Hero of the Year — recognition that education can be carried, literally, into the margins.

The image that remains is not a trophy. It is a cart, a circle of learners, and the belief that no child should be written off because of where they sleep.
