On Thursday morning, 16 April 2020, Captain Tom Moore was on a 25-metre path in the garden at Marston Moretaine. He used a walking frame. This was the 100th length. It was live on BBC Breakfast. He was 99.
A Guard of Honour from 1st Battalion The Yorkshire Regiment stood for the last lengths. His daughter Hannah Ingram-Moore was in the garden. So were his grandson Benji and his granddaughter Georgia.
The public target had been £1,000 for NHS Charities Together. By 08:00 BST that morning the page had passed more than £12 million.
He had wanted 100 lengths of the garden before he turned 100. A 100th-birthday party had been cancelled. By 8 April he had already done twenty lengths. He walked the path in tens: ten lengths, then ten more.
In 2018 he had fallen and broken a hip. The walk was thanks to NHS staff who had treated him.
At the end of the 100th length he said, "I never dreamt I would be involved in such an occasion as this."
