Alexandra Scott was diagnosed with neuroblastoma before her first birthday. By age four, after a stem cell transplant, she told her mother she wanted to hold a lemonade stand when she left the hospital — to help doctors help other kids.
Her first stand, in her Connecticut front yard, raised about $2,000. She kept going. As her story spread, lemonade stands appeared far beyond her neighborhood. Families, strangers, and communities joined in.
Alex died in August 2004 at age eight, knowing that with others’ help she had raised more than $1 million for childhood cancer research. Her parents later formalized Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation to continue the mission.
The foundation has since funded extensive research and support programs — a legacy built from powdered lemonade, cardboard signs, and a child’s clear wish: help other kids like me.
It is a hard story with a soft center. Grief and generosity can share the same table. A child’s small idea still refreshes the world.
