A kitchen on the frontlines

In 2010, a devastating earthquake struck near Port-au-Prince, Haiti. Chef José Andrés traveled there asking a practical question: how can cooks serve when everything has fallen?

He cooked alongside displaced families, learning local preferences — including how Haitians liked their black beans prepared. The lesson was larger than a recipe. Food relief works best when it listens.

From that experience, Andrés and his wife Patricia helped found World Central Kitchen, built on the idea that fresh, culturally respectful meals can be emergency aid and human dignity at once.

In later disasters — from hurricanes to other humanitarian crises — WCK became known for moving quickly, partnering locally, and feeding people at scale. The organization’s own story pages still root the mission in those early Haiti kitchens.
